Pushing a 4,500 lb box with the drag coefficient of a brick wall up to 60 mph takes a lot of fuel, no matter how you drive, or what motor you use.

There are mileage stats in the Vanagon archive from an informal survey a bunch of us listees responded to a couple years ago. From vague recollection 20 mpg was fairly mainstream for nearly any four-banger (air, wbx, I4, etc.) Some folks claim 23, 25, etc. I've been pleased with 20-23 in our 2056 cc air-cooled Westy.

Unless you have a diesel, or drive 25 mph, you won't see much above 22, in an automatic Vanagon. Sorry.

My real issue with the automatic is gas mileage. With my Ticco, I still get under 20 mpg.

I have new fuel rail/injector's no fault codes when running voltage viewed through software looks in range same mileage if I disconnect my O2 sensor. plugs seem to look ok, maybe a little dark.(I am no plug expect though)

Could it be leaks in the gaskets of my fuel tank?

Any tips ideas?
