Sounds like its the oil cooler o ring. Its a $3 o-ring available from VW-specialist parts places. It fails in cold weather dumping all your oil within 50 miles or so. VW recalled it in Canada cause its cold there but not in the US becuase they are cheap and dont give a shit. Another reason why I hate VW. I wonder how many engines have siezed because they were too cheap to replace a $3 o-ring?

Its easy to replace. Remove the oil filter, then remove the large nut holding the oil cooler in place and your cracked o-ring will fall out.
