The danger isn't so much when you're driving down the road, it's when some poor sap has to dismount your tire bomb later. This was a big issue for shops when people would use some of the older 'fix-a-flat' cans -- many of them contained mostly propane! (Ever wondered how they got a whole tire's worth of "air" inside that little can? Now you know.)
