This is a surefire recipe for bitching the threads of the subject pipe
nipple.  Although unlikely, a strap wrench might do the job.  Also, lining
the jaws of a pipe wrench or Vise-Grips with 1/16 inch thick copper strips
might work as long as the nipple is not crushed into an oval (i.e., egged, to
you pipefitters) by the force necessary to grip it.  At the end of the day,
the only predictable way to remove that stub is with an appropriately sized
internal pipe wrench.  Just make sure any shavings are knocked out of the
nipple before it's wrung back into place.
