I started using Mobil 1 ATF in my '85 back in 1999. Made a host of other improvements at around the same time with the end result of slightly increasing my gas mileage. The tranny was a little overdue for a fluid change at the time. It shifted smoother and quieted down just a bit after the change. It's time to do it again and I'll be filling it with Mobil 1 again. I can't attribute the mileage improvement directly to the tranny fluid but it certainly didn't hurt.

I have no first hand knowledge of the Cherokee trans but a friend of mine had no end of trouble with a pretty new Dodge Ram truck with an automatic -- the dealer rebuilt his twice then replaced it before the truck had 60k miles. I suspect that Chrysler has lost direction on their automatics. I learned to drive in a '66 Plymouth Valiant with a slant six/automatic. Abuse is a mild term for what I did to that car. We never changed the fluid and when we got rid of it at 110k miles (having been totaled twice) it shifted smoothly and quietly.
