That was also in the days before electronic speed limiters. ;) The days of special police engines are pretty much over, from what I've heard -- a police-spec Crown Vic has the same engine as the V-8 version your grandma can buy. The "police kit" consists mostly of upgraded suspension, now, and a few other strengthening mods. Otherwse it's basically just a "stripper" fleet version Crown Vic.
