In my opinion, the Audi 5 cylinder engine is a really good choice for Double and Single Cab Vanagon's since they already have the raised deck. Karl Mullendore got creative when he installed one in a Westy (2 wd) by extending the engine mounts (and hence lowering the engine a inch or so) and modifying a metal engine cover slightly to accommodate the distributer . It was a pretty clean fit, though I'm not sure it would work on a Syncro. Of course, Karl was working with the Overland kit (of which he is a distributer).
