On the matter of the 2.3 WBX passing the Audi 5 cyl. Let's think about it in pure terms of torque at the given rpm the engine is turning at 110 Kmh. The I5 is in the meat of its power curve with the 4-speed, so I doubt that the WBX would top it. I surmize the I5 had the 5-speed and it was developing less torque at that speed than the WBX with the 4-speed.

As for the lid modification, it looks like the Westfalia's cabinet protrudes exactly where the lid needs to be raised to accomodate the intake and the distributor. DOH!
