I have a VW cassette deck that has an 1/8" input jack on the front labelled
"cd" or "cd in", something like that. I haven't tried it yet, but it would
swap in for the '97 Golf unit that is in my '85 Westy now. Picked it up
at the junk yard, so I am not sure what year. The '97 unit will run the VW
(Clarion) 6 cd changer. My son actually bought the Clarion unit that
Crutchfield sells, but the VW stereo's amplifier wasn't up to his
standards, so he sent the changer back. He put another cd unit in his '97
K2 Golf and I inherited the '97 stereo. I went to the junk yard and
picked up the harness that fits these units and wired it in to my Westy.

A friend of mine has a Sanyo tape/cd combo, it works well but get VERY hot.
I have an Aiwa deck that has an AUX INPUT on the front. You can get a
standard headphone male to male chord and plug any old portable tape player
into it. In fact, you could plug an MP3 player, a portable TV, ect, into
it.
I like it ALOT and it was cheap. I definitely recommend the aux input.
You may want to consider the new decks tha can play mp3's. You can fit
more music on one cd for long road trips.
Also, consider the remote control. THis keeps your hands and EYEs on the
road. You don't have to reach for the player once you get used to the
remote control (I know, it sounds silly but try it, you'll never go back).

I am exteremely happy with them. They included so much help and
instruction as to how to install the new deck, I will never let HiFi touch
my bus again.
