The toughest press fit which I have found on a Vanagon is probably the front wheel bearings of a Syncro. I don't have a quantity to specify for the ultimate amount of force which is needed but, I do know this: if the press has SnapOn on it, a 20 ton rating will work admirably, whereas, if the press is labeled Harbor Freight, 50 tons might be needed plus a rap with a beater to finally get the part to seat. In my experience, the deformation of the frame of a cheap press will cause the workpiece to become cocked with respect to the line of thrust and a lot of extra push is needed to overcome this shortcoming.
