The only way to properly diagnose the operation of the temp gauge is with an Infrared Temp Gun avaliable at radioshack for $50 . The vanagon temp gauge system is notoriously unreliable. Added to the confusion is the fact that VW changed the specs on the temp senders so your gauge will read differently (higher) if you replace the sensor with a new one. This is another reason why i believe that the VW company is made up of a bunch of pricks that obviously dont care about vanagon owners.

good luck.
