Had this happen this summer. I threw the whole tool box at it. The stud
extractors mentioned in another email were tough to use for me - one size
was too large and basically just polished off a layer of metal, the next
smaller size was too small to get very far onto the stud. I got them at
Sears, and they were a set of five extractors to fit both metric and SAE
studs. In the end, It was a combination of the stud extractors, the
hammering required to drive the stud extractors onto the stud, and vice
grips that loosened it up. The threads on the block side of the stud I
broke flared out underneath the cylinder sleeve, so I had to loosen the
sleeve and pull it out an inch or two to fully remove and replace the stud.
I checked all the other studs for signs of stretching and found none.

Hello List... I'm back after being away for a few months. A lot has
happened, my grey Syncro that I bought in Montana last Summer was smashed
while parked in front of my house. So now I have a syncro partsmobile in my
back yard along with the westy... anyone need any parts?
Back to my reason for posting; I am trying to replace the head gaskets on my
90 and have the engine out. Unfortunately I broke one of the long studs
that hold the head on while trying to do the final torque. It is broken
leaving quite a bit of the shaft exposed, basically only the end threaded
portion was broken off. My question is what do I need to do now? I
searched the archives and only found info on exhaust studs. Will this back
out with a tool?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
