Yes, my 91 syncro Westy had an engine box fire and all the plastic and rubber melted (it sat in the junk yard for 2 years). The PO mechanic put a carb on it and it runs fine. sometimes the gaskets get a bit weak and I'd suggest replacing what you can. also I'vew been told that burned metal can be more suseptable to rust, and needs some special attention with special washes and special primer to get it all back and going again.
