Marshall, It is not so much that it is not needed as it would not do any good and it might do harm as the headbolt caps are sealed with a sealant and the mating surface of the head is made entirely of metal in the combustion area so there is nothing to compress. hope this makes some sense, gary Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 15:11:50 -0500 From: Marshall Otter <motter@MBL.EDU> Subject: Torqueing Head Bolts Just signed on to the list. Enjoying it so far! I have a question concerning torqueing head bolts. In my previous = rebuilding older VW engines experience, I seem to remember having to = re-torque the head bolts after so-many miles. We recently had a factory = rebuild engine put into our 87 GL Vanagon, and when I asked the mechanic = whether the head bolts should be retorqued, he said that would not be = necessary. Should I be concerned? We have put about 9000 miles on the = new engine so far. Thanks in advance for any discussion on this.
