Ron,
You are correct about the flange but as near as I
can tell I would have to be off by (360/3) or 120
degrees. This would not allow the other end of the
muffler to work towards the engine, both sides of the
muffler are off center. I have ordered a tailpipe
from vw and it cost nearly as much as that great
muffler you sent from Denmark. The fit was not great
but it looks to be a better muffler than the vw
equivalent which rusted out in about 5 years. I
think if I would cut the body a bit I could get the
much less expensive tailpipe you sent to work but I am
just not ready to do that until I see what the gold
bars buys from vw. Ron, I would like to politely
request that when a vw part number is ordered and a
replacement, perhaps better replacememt, is made that
this be somehow indicated at the time we select the
part. I find you to be a preferred vendor and a good
resource of information. Any additional information
that can be provided at the time of ordering about
substitutions would be appreciated as we all enjoy
these great savings. thanks gary

Two possibilities that come to mind:
1) muffler could be rotated such that tailpipe won't
clear (flange for
tailpipe is not centered on end on all mufflers, so on
those mufflers
rotation can matter)
2) aftermarket mounts, pipes, brackets, etc. or
something just slightly
out of spec, holding the end of the muffler up too
high so the tailpipe
won't clear.
If no obvious solution, we may be able to order the
tailpipe from a
different vendor, as different suppliers ship versions
that have
slightly different bends/lengths/profile (although all
considered okay
for vanagon, and indeed we almost never have a
problem).
