I've carried a lot of building materials in my Vanagon. The roof can carry a foot thickness of plywood. The volume capacity of the empty Vanagon is just a wee bit short of what a full size Ford van carries and much easier to load. The weirdest load I ever had was 2500 lbs of cement in my 69 transporter...it's a wonder I didn't blow the tires. The suspension was virtually bottomed out and steering was a very major effort.
