Today Sean Solowiej paid me a visit on his way down to Mexico, well he's
en route to Santa Fe, New Mexico and he's hoping to attend the big VW
event in Arizona at the end of March.
Sean is a nice young man from Wisconsin working on the project he
outlined below.
He'd driving a 90 Carat that he converted to Subaru power.
I must admit I don't think I enhanced his documentary very much but we
had a nice visit and he immortalized me on video tape as I stumbled
through his well planned interview process.
His late afternoon arrival circumvented a quick tour of Dallas scenic
spots but we managed to kill a good sized pizza and a half pot of coffee.
He met my Mom while he was here and she gave her approval (tough to get).
He said he's be Wal Mart parking most of the time and has only
occasionally got stuck with big ticket overnight and those were times
when he felt a good hot shower was in order after his days travel.
I think he's on a tight budget but I also think he's got the can do
spirit to complete his project.
I must admit after looking in his Carat (Converted into a Westy) he's got
his necessities down to a minimum content and is traveling light compared
to what I take on just a three day camping event.
I'm hoping that he gets some real gold at the Arizona Bus Show that can
turn his documentary into something really memorable.
If you're going to be there look for his 90 Carat that is Dark Blue, VW
Mag wheels and a primered Pop-Top.

Hello group,
I am working on a documentary film titled "The Original Idiot" about John
Muir's book: How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, A Manual of Step by Step
Procedures for the Compleat Idiot. The film has been in production for a
year now, and I plan to wrap it up by September 2003.
Part of the film's purpose is to illustrate the motivating ideas behind
the
DIY movement, showing why many people chose to do their own technical
work.
This book's open sharing of specialized information helped liberate and
empower people to move away from commercial dependence toward
self-reliance.
This March I will travel from New York to Mexico to collect interviews.
I hope to fit some VW rallies into the schedule to meet people, but if
any
of you have stories, perspectives, or attitudes regarding this manual I
would love to try to schedule personal meetings (in most cases, an
informal
half-hour video interview will do.)
There were also versions of the "Idiot's Guide" published in the Spanish
and
German languages. If anyone has a copy of either, and particularly if
they
can speak the language, I would be extremely grateful for an opportunity
to
come record your take on the book (regardless of location).
Thank You,
Sean Solowiej
