Weird. I don't have a micrometer, but if the replacement is tapered, I can't tell.

The thing was so difficult to securely clamp before that I never felt I could really get any good shots on the pin. Now that I'm dealing with the straight surface of the shaft, I think I can clamp down on it securely(and carefully, of course) and try hammering out the pin again. One fo the benefits of the grinding is that ends of what's left of the pin are dimpled down quite a bit and should hold a punch well.

If the past is any indication, I'm sure you'll be hearing details regardless of the result.
