Granted the torque of a 2.2L comes in higher but he Subaru "Phase II" 2.5 also has a very attractive flat torque curve also, starting at 140ft.lbs at 1000rpm, 150 at 1500 and max torque by 3000 rpm.. Also not bad.

However it's certainly true that this engine is an OBD-2 engine which has not yet been SMOG approved in CA. Non Californians get the fun.

The 3.3L is an OBD-1 engine, I know of at least one that's passed CA smog.
