Add a PVC tube as an additional bumper. For years RV's used 4 X 4 bumpers to hold the sewer hose.

Derek makes several good points on the high lift jack, but mind you these things are not light. Since I have a lifted vehicle, I'm trying to find ways to store things a low as possible to keep the center of gravity down, so the idea of storing it up on top doesn't really appeal to me, though I love the idea of teh PVC tube.
