No I didn't cut it down, I looked at that to clear the handle. Although if you were to shorten the unit (length wise), the rear housing moves forward. Yes it uncovers the handle, but I think you would hit your head on it all the time. So I just bit the bullet and hung it up. Like I say the handle is a little hard to get to, but well worth the cool air. Shortening the unit would be easy, nothing in there. So if your short (I'm not tall 5' 11"), or don't mind a love tap every now and then, by all means shorten it. Why don't you get someone to ride with you, and hold a box the right size, or something about where the A/C housing would be and just see how bad you will interfere with it while driving. I tell you I had an easy choice, 90 + summer weather, or hard to get to pop top handle................dah.
