Subject: Re: How you will blow your motor using Bar's leaks
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

many of us faced w/ a leaking head gasket (143,000 miles) have figured there is not much to lose by putting bars leak in our coolant. if it plugs up an engine w/ high miles, so what? it's on its way out anyway. rear heater, radiator, front heater---from list members reports, it sounds like you don't need to add bars leak to encourage their demise. my motor was leaking and dripping at the four corners. you could smell it a block away.

1990 w/ 8,000 miles on bar's leak. to date: rear heater hot front heater hot radiator, no change(of course it's winter in wisconsin) heads, no leaking

i used a small bottle of the stuff--not the s.u.v. size. it is impossible to know if the gray mystery blob was bar's leak, robert, but thank you for bringing it to my attention. i will check under my t-stat because i want to keep my original motor going as long as possible. runs great. always starts. plenty of power(can't understand why anyone would get a vw and expect more speed and power). i would not add anymore bar's leak. i am accumulating the necessary parts for the wbx replacement.

---------------------------------------------- So , a bad head job led to leaks which led to bar's leak and silicone. The leaking flange was the early warning that went unrecognized. Rather than try to figure out why the head would get hot enough to melt plastic, the

owner/mechanic justr went"ho-hum" and lathered on the silcone.

He had to have seen it was melting. Ad so his beloved or cursed Vanagon ended up in the junkyard for which I am grateful.

So if you have leaking heads you haven't told anyone about, and you've put a bunch a Bar's leak in, at least remove the thermostat cover and look under the thermostat for a gray blob.
