My understanding is that a slide hammer works best. I've tried the method of filling it with grease and using an input shaft or some other rod to "hammer" the bearing out. The idea being that hydrolic pressure would force it out. I didn't have such luck. I finally wound up just hammering it out using a chisel. I scratched the crank shaft a little but, but the new one went in just fine. Keep in mind, I did this all with the crank shaft out of the engine, and this was a diesel.
