Lowering the water temp 10F will help sometimes, but when the oil temp decides to north of 260, lowering the water temp won't help much. In addition, the heat from the oil is still being absorbed by the water cooling system lowering it's available capacity. In extremely warm weather, the the low temp t-stat and fan will accomplish little more than running the fan more. Unless your stuck in slow moving traffic the fan is a waste and does nothing more than help wear out the alternator. If you really want to control the oil temps and add cooling capacity, an external cooler with T-stat is the best choice.

If you have a cooler thermostat with a matched fan switch... then your water that does the cooling will be cooler...
