> under my van trying to get the trans back in.... don't seem to want to go in...? maybe the splines aren't aligning properly? everything was straight and looked good, engine supported with a jack, etc.how does this fine tuning get done on the air-cooled vanagon? on my '70 i could rotate the fan pulley to turn the crankshaft.

If you've got both the engine and the trans out together (that's what it sounds like), why not just put the trans and the engine down on the driveway and mate them there and then put the trans/engine assembly back as one piece? I rotate the engine back and forth (we're only talking about small movements here) by grasping the top and bottom portions of the fan belt with two hands and pulling/pushing on the belt in the direction I want to rotate the engine. > > another concern i had was when i was removing the flywheel i had to lock up the teeth with a screwdriver on thr engine stud to keep it from moving, whereas when i reinstalled it it wouldn't turn at all. is this normal?i didn't do anything other than install new seals....

That doesn't sound good. I've always had to lock the flywheel for both removal and installation. Check your endplay.
