You're probably right. Computer supplies are generally over-rated, and can rarely deliver their maximum rating for long anyway.

Actually, that's probably what the DC-DC supply is doing internally. But it's doing it at a higher frequency than the 60 Hz you'd be using with an inverter, so it's more compact and maybe even more efficient.
