Hiya from the road (but not moving),
As part of our unscheduled nearly complete overhaul, I got a rebuilt manual
trans from GoWesty in California to Virginia. I also got new linkage from
the trans to the stick. The whole magilla was strapped to a palate and
shipped via Viking Freight, which was purchased and is now run by FedEx
Freight. The shipping was a whopping $160, though it would have been cheaper
with UPS, but I and the shipper weren't convinced they'd be nice to it or
that it could be packaged well enough to withstand their possible abuse.
Anyway it arrived safely 5 days later and I got to spend two hours busting
up the palate. I needed the exercise.
Now we'll see if it works...
P.S. - If anyone near Richmond is interested in a 4-speed tranny from an '80
Westy, in unknown condition, pmail me. (unknown condition insofar as it made
noises when we decided to replace it, but it's possible it was the clutch.
Never bothered to diagnose the problem, just amputated. Long story.)
P.P.S. - Speaking of long stories, the whole saga (was to be a big roadtrip,

When I got my AT from Long Enterprises in CA in May of 2000, they shipped it
in
three different boxes here to VA. Here's the breakdown:
Box 1, Final Drive, 64 lbs, $38.04
Box 2, Torque Converter, 22 lbs, $17.74
Box 3, Transmission, 90 lbs, $52.44
Shipped UPS Ground.
According to Daryl's (sp?) info on shipping at the AA Transaxle web site, "A
Vanagon trans weighing 100 Lbs costs about $90 to ship. UPS will ship up to
150Lbs."
You shouldn't have to truck ship it unless you're shipping the tranny and
final
drive together.
