I had the same dilemma a couple years ago. The resulting discussion is in the archives. It is my personal belief that a sturdy steel base is the best thing for the safety of the jumpseat passenger. I didn't want to purchase and install the factory mounts. My final solution was to fabricate my own mounts that do not go through the floor like the factory setup. I cut two pieces of steel bar stock that fit between the ribs in the steel floor of the van. I drilled appropriately sized holes for the "dowels" at the end of the jumpseat legs. Then the steel pieces were welded to the sheet metal floor. I did this in a passenger van, so I had to relieve the underside of the molded pads that go under the carpet to make it lay flat.
