You forgot to mention that it's necessary to clean the splines on the shaft with a scriber or pin to get the old metal out before doing this...

If the clamping nut is bottoming out on a shoulder, you can likely get at least one more restore out of it by adding a washer under the nut (and if necessary grinding some metal from the bottom face of the arm). I don't remember whether there's such a shoulder on the Vanagon, but I just fixed the arm on an old CaraVan this way, worked beautifully. You have to make sure that the hole in the washer is big enough to clear the shoulder (and actually does clear it when you install).
