Nick,

I've done quite a bit of "rough road" driving and a little bit of off-road. The vanagon works well for getting over rocks, ruts, and other obstacles on otherwise firm dirt or gravel roads. When on soft surfaces, however, it is essentially a one-wheel drive. Both rear tires must be on firm gound or you'll just spin. This winter, I got rescued by a nice guy in a 75 Land Cruiser with a winch. Any $$ to be "invested" I think would be better spent on a 4wd. A 2wd van with great suspension would still be stuck in the sand.

Doug
