I'd take my vanagon over a 2wd pickup anyday...unless it had 31" tires or something. but all this talk about loafs makes me want to try one!

I'd say a lot of it depends on your definition of off-roading....mud?streams?loose rock?snow?all of the above? Probably about the best upgrade you could get is a locking diff-cost me about $600. To me, its better than a syncro because everything is so #$@! expensive on those.
