Bad fuel pressure regulator will make it run really rich. I had this
happen to my '86. Eventually blew off one of the fuel lines!

Subject: 85 gl still running rich at vw shop.
well I wrote in a couple of weeks ago with a van that would not run after
replacing fuel lines(and filter), intake boots and injector seals. got
the battery charged and it is running really rich and flooding. I should
mention that I also replaced the connecting pipe, O2 sensor, muffler and
air filter(purolator from pep boys). gave up trouble shooting the problem
after I checked and double checked all of my work and took it to a VW shop
locally. Well, they can't seem to figure it out either(DOH!). I would
like some suggestions to give them to try. They have already replaced the
plugs becuase they were fouled and drained and replaced the oil becuase
they said that it was over filled due to the extremly over rich mix. They
said they were going to check for a vacuum leak( I was under the assumption
that that would make it run lean). Some things I was thinking after
reading the archives is either the plug wires, the connection of the O2
sensor (evidently this is coaxial connection. I used a 1 wire bosch unit
same as what was on the van. just cut the connector from old and put it on
the new one.) The other thing I thought of is the AFM. Could I have
jostled the swipper thingy or flap got stuck open when I had it out of the
van to get at the manifold etc.? I don't know but I can't leave my van
with a shop charging me god knows what an hour to try to "figure" this out
anymore ( they already have over 2 hrs. on it already) Please someone read
this and reply before I call them again tommorrow. Thanks everyone.
