Matt,
No luck on my attempts to adjust the valves with
the engine running but doubt that it would help.
At least two things are important to set the
valves.
The valve springs and the valve lifters are working
against each other and what is true in a static state
is not true in the dynamic state(running).
If you want to take the time this is what I did.
1) Set the valves to zero lash and drive
short trips for a week.
2) Set the valves again to zero lash and
drive another week
3) now that you know your closer to zero lash
reset the valves in two turns and determine the engine
will not run, Perhaps it will run?
4) reSet the valves for 1 and 1/2 turns and it
should run.
At one and 1/2 turns my engine initially smoked
and backfired but after a period of running the
lifters adjusted and the engine seems smooth.
