I think part of the problem is that VW has never been very good about picking a name and sticking with it. In various literature you'd find the old vans referred to as Type 2, Bus, Station Wagon, Microbus, or Kombi. Nobody ever did sort out whether it was a Bug or a Beetle. And of course there was the Type 141, which eventually everyone just called the Thing.
