Hi,
I don't have an engine stand, but I am in the bay area and am about to split the engine case on my 1983 Westy waterboxer today as well. I wouldn't mind giving someone a hand that lives in the bay area who is working on a similar rebuild so that I can learn a bit about the rebuild process and exchange information on machine shops. I think I am going to use Ellsworth in Mountain View. They said about $135 for an align bore job.
I'm also pricing out a 2.2L Subaru engine as a possible transplant.
If someone in the SF Bay area wants me to drive over and offer free help on a weekend, let me know.
My skill level is pretty poor. I've never done a rebuild and the biggest job I've done is a cylinder head replacement (which I just bought a rebuilt unit from Peter at VolksCafe and dropped it in.)
BTW, I have a 1977 VW Bus as well. Are the oil filters in the WaterBoxer and the '77 air-cooled engines interchangable. I may do an oil-change on my '77 bus today since I'm driving it more since the '83 Westy is on jack stands now. I may go to Target and just buy the car and driver filters. I think I read somewhere that they were okay. I only have one black oil filter left in my closet and I want to save it for the Westy.
