This brings to mind an interesting thought I've had about shifting. Every time you shift you put pressure on the syncronizers in the transmission. These parts were out ever so little, on every shift. We all know how in vanagon transmission these also crack. Because of this I have learned to shift with the tips of 2 fingers. Like this it is hard to put to much pressure on any part of the shifting parts. This obviously is true with the shift lever.
