Sounds like a standard 82 problem. New rebuilts are about $800. / 900. Used tranny from me $450.00, I've run them and they are good. My tranny went south after about 8000 miles after I bought my 83 Westy. The PO's wife had short legs and shifted with the synchronizers. The tranny had 145K on it.
