Subject: Mystery relay and rat bastards!

While replacing my leaking water pump in my 1986 non-gl westy, I noticed what looked for all the world like a mouse hole in the hard plastic plate covering up the space behind the right rear taillight. I removed said plate to discover quite a large collection of acorn shells, pine needles, chewed up wiring(!) and rat turds. After having a minor Hanta virus panic attack I cleaned out all the filth and reattached the chewed thru side marker light wiring. I also noticed a strange relay hiding all the way back in this compartment. The wiring to it is quite chewed an d slightly fried as well. I haven't noticed any real problems with the van other than a failure to idle smoothly until warmed up. I attributed this to the usual grounding issues until seeing this chewed, fried mess. Could someone please educate me on the function of this large relay? I haven't been able to find in in the Bentley manual, at least so far.
