Personally, I'd rather replace the syncro rings if they corrode after 10-15 years than have to replace the ring and pinion. The cost of the Ring and Pinion is often the difference between and rebuilding a transaxle or using it for a boat anchor. If the GL-4 was the ultimate for the final drive, GL-5 would not be speced in all VW final drives such as the Syncro front and all automatics. Also, I have yet to see corroded rings using GL-5 synthetics. Dennis

Tom, Below are some links to product specs for a couple of different manufactures. One of them mentions using GL-4 for boat motors, so you might want to see if there is anyone in your area that sells marine supplies. In situations like this what I have found that works best for me is to phone customer support for the company (you should be able to get an 800 number from the company's web site) and ask them for the phone numbers of dealers in your area. Failing that you should be able to find e-stores who will ship it to you. Of course you can always use GL-5, but as mentioned my previous message it will come at cost of shortened equipment life. http://www.amsoil.com/products/alu.html http://www.pennzoil.com/penn/products/car_truck/pdfs/gearoil/GL-4GearLub ricant.pdf http://www.pennzoil-quakerstate.com/Tech/Pdsheet/QuakerState/Gear <http://www.pennzoil-quakerstate.com/Tech/Pdsheet/QuakerState/Gear&Trans mission/pdf/MultiPurposeGL-4GearLubricants.PDF> &Transmission/pdf/MultiPurposeGL-4GearLubricants.PDF
