Subject: control arm bushings got the squeaks
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
hey all-
my '81 westfalia has a serious case of the squeaks.
posted way back about it when i first bought the van
and the consensus seemed to be control arm bushings.
talked to a local mechanic about it and he also
thought that's probably what it is. he said it'd be
real costly to fix and most folks just live with it. i
called the dealer and he quoted me $88 each side.
that's just the part and also i'd have to get it
pressed in and the old one pressed out....
i've tried lubricating it with this rubber lube stuff
that's supposed to be great. but no change in the
squeaks.
what i'm wondering is how difficult it would be to
remove the control arm itself and replace it with one
that i get from the junkyard. and also what years the
control arm on an '81 is compatible with.
anyone have any experience with this issue ?
i was earlier thinking i would live with the squeaks
after talking to the mechanic, but after driving with
it for awhile i have to try and fix it. it's like
driving a rusty mattress or something.....
thanks for any help....
peace, jeff
