Volks,
Since the subject of tent options has come up again with the regularity of
Spring flowers, I thought I should mention, once again, the Cabela tent we
bought two years ago. Here's the link:

At $199 it was a tremendous deal. We bought it to use on a two week trip
out West. We had just purchased our Westy and I wasn't of a mind to risk a
5000 mile trip in it so we rented a Dodge Sport Caravan and used this tent.
The tent is of excellent quality and easy enough to set up. I tried it on
the back of my Westy and it fit fine although it is necessary to restrain
the hatch door from opening too far otherwise it wants to lift the tent off
the ground. I found that two bungee cords had just the right amount of
tension to keep the hatch at the right height. They market these tents for
SUVs which I'm sure many of would have the same problem. Although, I still
have never tried it, I'm sure that this tent could also be use very easily
on the side door too. I believe if it were done right it would create a
much more weather and bug proof seal on the side door than my Westfalia tent
ever could. I know there are other Vanagon owners who have done this.
I eventually finished restoring my Westfalia tent and we started using it
with our Westy a month or so after returning from our Great Western
Adventure. Here's a picture of it:

So the Cabela tent goes unused. I might be talked into selling it but I'm
tempted to hang onto it for when all the other threads fall out of my
Westfalia. Since it was used only two weeks it's in fairly new condition.
Pmail me if you're really interested but I'd suggest that for the price you
should consider just getting a new one. You won't be disappointed.
