Well after a very annoying winter the westy if finally up and running again. I struggled with the "running rich" problem for months.... And its all sorted now. Shes running great and just in time for Paddling season. Turns out the battery was on its way out and effecting the computer performance and wreaking havic there. The other problem was the o2 sensor... after 3, yes thats right 3 o2 sensors..... we found out that my 86 westy syncro required a 1-wire o2 sensor... All the repair manuals and books said 3-wire but the official vw wiring diagram showed a 1-wire. I am not 100% sure which is correct but since we changed to a 1-wire she has been running fine. a little idle surge on startup but nothing too much to be concerned about. Thanks to everyone for all the help.
