Since I've a rusty fuel tank I've two filters between tank and pump- the opaque square one with the backflow prevention in it, and a clear one between that and the tank so I can see how dirty the fuel line is. The clear one is a $3.00 unit and easy to replace.

But I still think sooner or later the tank will have to get changed and the pump too. :-(

Steve,

I think the consensus is that the dirt won't hurt the fuel pump. I have heard of fuel pumps disintegrating and sending crap down the line. What a horrible thing if the filter was on the other side of the pump.

I decided to have the best of both worlds and I put in a square plastic filter before the pump and I have the usual large round filter after the pump.
