If it's a rod, it's already too far gone. If the rod fails in use, it can easily destroy the rebuildable engine core. Certainly, you will not trust it on a trip of any distance. My VW masochism is limited to diesels. Some of the better wasserboxer mechanics may be able to help you determine if it is actually a failing rod.
