IMHO, the Bentley manual is useless when it comes to maintaining the Vanagon cooling system. The Haynes manual tells you to disconnect the main coolant lines at the thermostat housing and coolant distributor then flush both the engine and radiator loop with a garden hose. Removing the thermostat will also help. Disconnect the heater hoses at the same location to backflush that coolant loop.

Don't bother, it will only flush the heater core loop, not the radiator loop.

I use the 80F thermostat and fan switch. The gauge reads just below the LED during the winter months, right on the LED the rest of the year. The fan switch doesn't really change too much since the fan is usually running on low speed anyway with the A/C on.
