The Prestone flush kit is the only way to go. I have used it for years and it does not only flush the heater core! To each his own. I like being able to drain and flush from a convenient spot (a nice low spot at that) underneath the van. Makes it very convenient and much more likely it will be done on a regular basis.

IMHO, the Bentley manual is useless when it comes to maintaining the Vanagon cooling system. The Haynes manual tells you to disconnect the main coolant lines at the thermostat housing and coolant distributor then flush both the engine and radiator loop with a garden hose. Removing the thermostat will also help. Disconnect the heater hoses at the same location to backflush that coolant loop.

Don't bother, it will only flush the heater core loop, not the radiator loop.

I use the 80F thermostat and fan switch. The gauge reads just below the LED during the winter months, right on the LED the rest of the year. The fan switch doesn't really change too much since the fan is usually running on low speed anyway with the A/C on.

Good luck,
