Don't use binder clips. Use the hand sized spring clips that you can find @ Menards amongst the other clamps.  They have orange rubber on both ends so they don't harm you paint or your hands, and have a very strong spring in the middle.  It also helps to sew a pocket in the edge of your awning that mates to the van, and insert a piece of 1/4" or 3/8" rod.  This makes the edge rigid where the clips attach, and gives them a better gripping surface.  I used 3 sections of 3/8" all-thread with threaded coupling nuts for ours so I can collapse it and stow it when traveling.

With spring camping season finally here and talk of awnings, I wanted to ask those who have succeeded in fashioning their own awnings: How did you attach it to the rain gutters / roof? There has to be a better way other than binder clips, and I'd be interested in hearing about other folk's resourceful solution to this.
