It attaches in the same manner than most modern side tents attach. There is a "pocket" sewn into the edge of the awning, into which slips a pole. This pole sits inside your rain gutter, and clamps in with the included clamps. Because of this design little or no rain can get through. However, it is a relatively light duty awning, and in the event of a particulatly torrential rain storm you'll probably want to press up on the center of the awning during the storm once or twice if possible just to allow any pooling water to pour off the edge. (Or just lower one side of it slightly during the storm so the water flows off rather than accumulating on the flat top.) I, my wife, and our 4 year old used ours during a very severe storm last summer and stayed very dry underneath it. In fact, we'd have been pretty miserable without it, as it poured for several hours and otherwise we'd have been pent up inside the camper the whole afternoon!
