I didnt go out and buy an L-shaped 17 mm allen wrench just for the Vanagon, I bought it years ago when I had a Dasher. From Sears, and it was expensive. However it fits my Vanagon trannies. You just have to point the long handle piece upwards and reach above the shaft to pull it. Really quite easy, especially if you worked on Fiats years ago !! I dont understand if people say it wont fit.

cheers, Steve Cotsford
