Dear Sean,

You are correct, a two-piece alum. pole snaps together in the sleeve to give the canopy it's backbone. The straps are made to tie around a bar or through the rail on a rack. You could set the bar into the rain gutter but I would think that you would need to secure it so it would not "pop" out of the gutter in a wind storm.
